Nephi's Reminds Us that The Lord Remembers Covenants

I slowed down a bit this week and studied the Book of Mormon more for myself than for my kids, and boy, I learned a lot.

One of the things I've been increasingly impressed by is the idea that when we make covenants the Lord can bless and uphold us in a very powerful way.

As I was reading and studying for myself last Saturday, I came to 1 Nephi Ch 17:22-55, in which Nephi is preaching to his brothers Laman and Lemuel.  He is recounting for them the flight of Ancient Israel as they escape from bondage in Egypt.

Since I was in a pondering mode, I asked myself, "Why is Nephi bringing this up right now?"  What is the correlation?

I always just thought, well, the Israelites are their ancestors.  The miracles of this story means a lot to them.  And the promises as well.  

As I started to write down the details in the story, I started to compare Moses and the Israelites' journey to Lehi and his family....and things started to look really similar.

I wrote down three columns across the top of my paper:

The first column is for Moses, the second is for Lehi's family, the third is the Lord's covenant people today (the Church).

I started to see many comparisons:

Who: The Ancient Israelites - Lehi's Family - God's People Today

Their Leader/God's Prophet: Moses - Lehi - God's Prophet on the Earth Today (Pres. Russell M. Nelson)

The Wicked City/Place of Bondage:  Egypt - Jerusalem - The World/Babylon

Miracles God Provided on their Journey: Manna for food - The Lord made their food sweet so they didn't have to cook it - We are spiritually fed today probably more than ever.

Miracles in Travel: The parting of the Red Sea - The Crossing of the Wilderness without fire and the Crossing of the Ocean in a boat made in the wilderness - The Crossing of the Plains by the pioneers and more miracles ahead!

How the groups responded to God:  Led by the Lord, but hardened their hearts and had to be chastened - Same for Lehi's family from time to time - The same for us.

How the Lord handled their enemies: The armies of Pharoah were drowned in the Red Sea when they pursued Ancient Israel after setting them free - Laban was killed when he tried to stand in the way of Nephi obtaining the plates. - The Great & Abominable Church (Satan's church) will eventually be destroyed as well.

Another similarity in all three: The Lord brought each group of people eventually to their promised land, however there were casualties along the way.  Spiritually speaking, we don't want to physically go with the flow and then be "lost" spiritually in the end because we weren't learning and growing closer to God along our journey.

There are other comparisons to be drawn.  But it wasn't until I slowed down that I could really inspect them, and then it became clear why Nephi is telling his brothers about the freeing of Israel by Moses.

That story is the story of how Christ will always deliver his people if they choose to follow him.  It is how he is currently delivering his people today.

Here are two quotes that stood out to me as clear, strong, reliable truths:

1. He leadeth away the righteous into precious lands.  (As someone whose family was recently moved from one precious land to another, this truth brought me hope in God's ability to lead me along and helps me trust Him more!)

2. The wicked he (eventually) destroyeth. (Both from 1 Ne. 17:38.

And 3. He LOVETH those who will have him to be their God.

And how do we show the Lord that we "will have him to be our God?"  I think this is answered in 1 Ne. 17:40:

"And he loveth those who will have him to be their God.  Behold, he loved our fathers, and he covenanted with them, yea, even Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and he remembered the covenants which he had made; wherefore, he did bring them out of the land of Egypt."

I believe in the power of making promises with God in holy Temples. These promises are what we call Covenants.  It is a powerful bond between God and his people, between groups of people and more recently between individuals.

I'm sure I learned this comparison in Seminary or something years ago, but I'm glad that I took the time to slow down and let the Spirit reteach these truths to me again last week.

The Path Foward: Repent Every Day

After that wonderful General Conference, in which we've been asked to "Do Better & Be Better," to "Repent every day," and to do the spiritual work necessary to know God lives and that this is His church, it's the perfect time to turn our minds to the Savior and really reflect on what He has done for us and on what role we want His sacrifice to play in our lives.

Will the Atonement of Jesus Christ be an afterthought?  Something that we think of once a week as we take the Sacrament?  Or will we start today to make a goal to repent of something EVERY DAY?

I realized as I was talking about President Nelson's admonishment to repent every day, that if we aren't doing this (which up until now, I really have not) then perhaps this is one major way that we are taking the Sacrament in vain...taking His name in vain.  It will take great humility and personal committment, but I'm willing to try.  And I believe that doing this one thing, at least in my life, will make a big difference.

It's interesting how at peace I feel after this General Conference.  It all seems doable.  I mean, I understand I have my own personal work to do and that it will be work, however, the gentleness and charity that I believe our leaders displayed in their tone and delivery of their talks, just distills so peacefully on my soul.  I think in many ways we were rebuked, but it was done with such love, that I definitely see a clear path forward...and it's now up to me to take it, and to try my best every day...and repent and use the Atonement to help myself improve when I do mess up.

It seems so simple.  It seems so right.

Ok, as you know, we've done a lot of fun Easter Activies in our family over the years...(most of them linked here.)

Is the Book of Mormon Written for Us?

Is the Book of Mormon written for us?  Did the prophets writing therein really see our day and our "doings?"

As our family gets closer to our goal of finishing the Book of Mormon together for the third (?) time, it becomes increasingly apparent that it is written specifically for us and they most certainly did see our day.

Sixteen chapters away from the finale of the book, this is sometimes comforting and at times disturbing as it feels like the sins of our generation are on full blast on the big screen of our scripture reading each morning.

As a result, it makes it very easy to "apply the scriptures unto ourselves," just as it was easy to apply General Conference to ourselves last week.

While reading Ether Chapter 6, it was very easy to compare our family's recent move and all of the travails we've experienced before, during, and since to the journey of the people of Jared across the ocean.  It says that the Lord sent a wind to blow them continuously (344 days straight) until their barges reached the promised land.  I'm so grateful to a college friend who taught me during an FHE one evening to look at the storm and see that it was the method that the Lord used to bring the people to a better place.  Our storms can do the same thing for us.  We also noted that although there was darkness all around them and they spent most of their time buried under water and tossed about, they did not have to cross in darkness because of the faith of the Brother of Jared in Jesus Christ...and we don't have to either.

In Ether Chapter 8, which we read yesterday, we see the reintroduction of secret combinations into what was previously a peaceful beginning to their new society in what we know as the Americas.  Because of a thirst for power, people entered into oaths with one another to uphold the wicked behavior of their leaders or those who wished to lead.  We learn that these secret oaths are had among all nations and are as old as Cain and that the author of these secret combinations is Satan himself.  Moroni warns the modern gentiles (talking to us) to guard against these secret combinations and to not let them get above us, because if we do, it will prove, as with all people, to lead to our utter destruction.

Are these secret combinations had among us?  They most certainly are, if one glance at the news this week is any indication.  I couldn't sleep last night, and made the "mistake" of taking in all of the details of the latest sex scandal in Hollywood--and it's a big one.  Being a news person my main interest was discovering why this wasn't reported sooner by certain news outlets.  I remember seeing this man on TV during a news clip of the Oscars earlier this year and thinking, "Wow, he looks like a real sleazeball."  Little did I know how true that inkling was.  And how disgusting it was last night to read all of the accusations against him and even more disturbing to know that no one stood up to him, in fact, his associates aided and covered for him in a wide range of industries (including media and journalism companies) in order to gain access to his power.

As someone who worked in a lot of professional environments with a lot of powerful people before marrying and becoming a mother, I have some surprising insight into how widespread this kind of behavior is and how much people thirst for power, access to powerful people, and fame in our society.  As a young female, I got to see firsthand how men at almost any level of power prey on the young, eager, and naive women around them.  And my friends who worked in similar fields can share similarly harrowing tales.

Did the prophets of the Book of Mormon see our day.  I testify that they absolutely did, which is what makes it such a powerful tool in our lives today.

As Elder Nelson taught in General Conference, "The Book of Mormon provides the fullest and most authoritative understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ to be found anywhere.  It teaches what it really means to be born again...The full power of the gospel of Jesus Christ is contained in the Book of Mormon. Period."

So is it possible to turn our society around and become the kind of people who can dwell with God?  The Book of Mormon shows us that people can turn around rather quickly, if we desire to.  In Ether 9, we read that after losing the kingdom to his conspiring, wicked son, King Omer and then his son King Emer rule in righteousness...so much so that the Lord poured out his blessings upon the land and King Emer saw Jesus Christ in person.

However, we don't want to be flip-floppers during our probationary state--during our lives.  We don't want to be lukewarm.  The world will do what it will do, but we must worship the Lord and obey His commands so that we can cross through the darkness of this world with our lights shining brightly.

I tuned in only at the very end of last night's Face to Face live Youtube event, but what I heard in the last 5-10 minutes was beautiful.  

One young woman talked about standing strong against temptations and how hard that is as a youth today because they are faced with so many evil things.  She said that she thinks about someday after this life we will all sit around a table with the prophets.  She said that no one will want to say, "Oh, my life was easy."  We will say, "I worked hard.  I tried my best. I stood strong," etc.  Not one of us will say it was easy, but it will have been worth it, and our personal storms will be what brought us to a glorious end, to our personal promised land, if we have faith enough in the Savior to make the journey with His help and the help of the wisdom provided in this sacred book, which if read daily can qualify us for heaven's help in our lives.  Help we will certainly all need more and more of in the days ahead!

Walk the Path that Jesus Walked...and Be Happy!

In his General Conference address "Ponder the Path of Thy Feet," President Monson taught, "We need not walk the shores of Galilee...to walk where Jesus walked.  All of us can walk the path He walked when...we choose to follow Him as we journey through mortality."

To help us learn more about President Monson's talk, I worked with Scarlett to develop a visual lesson and activity that she could teach the other children during FHE, something she was most eager to do!

The visual that President Monson lays out...that of following a path, was an easy one to focus on and fun to replicate.

My kids had fun painting each other's feet to create footprints for our "path," and I enjoyed standing back and observing my children as they take more and more initiative in the conducting of our lessons and activities.  They are really growing up.

In his talk, President Monson points out that Jesus Christ walked the paths of disappointment, loss, sorrow, temptation, and pain--and that as His disciples, we will also experiences these things. 

But he says, "While we will find on our path bitter sorrow, we can also find great happiness."

But how?

He continues: "We, like Jesus, can walk the path of obedience...."  We, like Jesus, can walk the path of service, prayer, and scripture study.  We can be merciful, humble, righteous, peacemakers, stand up bravely for our beliefs, and let our light shine regardless of ridicule.  We can be rescuers.

Scarlett did a great job teaching this lesson and helping us to understand that while we will all experience these things in mortality, we can choose to follow Jesus Christ and find happiness even as we experience pain, disappointment, and sorrow in this life.

The game that Scarlett came up with to help us talk about this was as follows:

Each person took a turn rolling a die.  If the number came up odd, they came up and read one of the "sad" experiences on our path.  If the number came up even, the person came up and read one of the good things we can do/become on our path.  Each person shared an example of ways we might feel sorrow, pain, humility, service, mercy, etc. in life.  And then we shared one way that the Savior experienced or demonstrated those things during his life and we compared these experiences to each other.

It was a very clever game, and I'm proud of Scarlett for coming up with it all on her own.  She's a very good teacher.

The kids all seemed to enjoy it, but when Autumn lost interest and rolled herself up in a blanket, she got laid on by the teacher!  That'll keep her attention, Scarlett! ;)

Stay in the Boat by Elder Ballard

Attitude really is everything...well, maybe not everything...but probably 95% of everything.

At the beginning of February, our family of six packed some clothes and vacated 90% of our house to live in our master bedroom...all together for a month.

At first it was fun, then it was tough, then it was freezing cold, then it was exciting, relaxing, then it was stressful and chaotic and throw-up-y and exhausting.  And the whole time it was a ton of hard work.  But in the end, it was totally awesome.

That a lot like life right?  Unexpectedly difficult things happen to us, like all the time.  But our attitude really helps us to come through it all in one piece.  And knowing that the Lord has a hand in the details helps us to come through happier and stronger.

On one of those Sundays when we were confined to my bedroom, our family decided to take another look at Elder Ballard's Talk Stay in the Boat and Hold On!

Here are my kids...Oh, they're listening so closely, aren't they?  They really did like the white-water imagery that Elder Ballard showed.  

I knew that this would be a good talk to teach the children because it used such simple imagery that my kids could easily remember.

We used our General Conference Smash Books to create a fun way to review Elder Ballard's recommendations to:

1. Stay in the Boat 

- (Experience a continuous conversion to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and stay focused on the leaders of the Church...our river guides!)

2. Always wear a life preserver 

- (Continuously study the scriptures, words of the apostles, fast and pray.)

3 Hold on with both hands

-Stay focused on these simple things.  Stay focused on the Lord so that you do not become distracted.

As Elder Ballard shares in his talk...we are in the midst of a great storm.  These are the storms of our days...the storms of life.  We need to remember that Christ is at the helm of the Ole Ship Zion.  He leads this church, and, if we let him, He leads our lives. And with him as our Captain, we cannot not fail.

Sustaining the Prophets by Elder Nelson

During our snow day today, we studied Elder Nelson's talk from General Conference called Sustaining the Prophets.

With General Conference just weeks away, we've got some catching up to do in our General Conference lessons, and this one had a very important message that I wanted my kids to learn well...what it means to sustain the prophets!

For our discussion, we focused on the imagery of raising one's hand to sustain the prophet, as mentioned in this quote by Elder George Albert Smith:

“The obligation that we make when we raise our hands … is a most sacred one. It does not mean that we will go quietly on our way and be willing that the prophet of the Lord shall direct this work, but it means … that we will stand behind him; we will pray for him; we will defend his good name, and we will strive to carry out his instructions as the Lord shall direct.

While we listened to Elder Nelson's talk, we traced our own hands onto card stock paper, cut them out.  Then we wrote the specific examples of things we promise to do when we say that we will sustain the prophets...on the fingers of our hands.  Conveniently, we came up with five main points.  They are as follows:

When we raise our hands to sustain a prophet, we promise to:

1. Stand behind him.

2. Pray for him.

3. Defend his good name.

4. Strive to Carry Out his instructions as directed by the Lord

5. Love him.

*We added this last point from an Ensign article by Elder Walker called "Follow the Prophet."  In it, Elder Walker says, "I believe the Lord expects us to love the prophet, to sustain him, and to follow his example."

This "handy" imagery will allow us to easily remember what we are promising to do when we raise our hands to sustain the prophets!

Here are some other points brought out in this talk:  

-the leaders of our church are called by proper authority (by God)

-no prophet or other leader in this church has ever called himself or herself into office and they are not elected. 

-because of this, his counsel will be untainted, unvarnished, unmotivated by any personal aspiration, and utterly true!

-you and I do not 'vote' on Church leaders at any level.  We do, though, have the privilege of sustaining them.

-unlike the world, we do not remove people from office if they grow old or become disabled.

-the church has been organized by the Lord himself.

-He has a system in place that provides for circumstances such as illness that comes with advancing age.

-there are counterbalances in place to make sure no one can ever lead the Church astray.

I liked the these points, "The living Lord leads His living Church!¹² The Lord reveals His will for the Church to His prophet." and "Our sustaining of prophets is a personal commitment that we will do our utmost to uphold their prophetic priorities."  When I re-read that last line, I took some time to ponder just what are the "prophet's priorities" and am I doing my best to fulfill my personal commitment to uphold them?  This is a good thing for us to ponder and answer for ourselves.

Here's my hand.  I had to change the word "dictates" to "directs", because I like to use the words of the prophets just as closely to their actual words as I can when I teach my kids!

Oh, and we attached our hands to tongue depressors, because who doesn't like waving big hands around like they're cheering on their favorite sports team?  We certainly do!

The Secret to Everything

Happy New Year!

I woke up this morning, slightly groggy, but feeling good about staying up until midnight with my son who was eager to do this grown-up thing!  (No this picture is not from this morning!!) We played the Bean game and watched parts of The Karate Kid II.  Woohoo!  At midnight, he wanted to yell and celebrate.  I've been sick for a week now, so I was a little more low-energy, but today I do want to yell and celebrate, because I know I spent my time doing the right thing last night, which for me was not sleeping, but spending rare alone moments with my little boy, who's getting not-so-little very fast!

It's a new year.  And hopefully, it feels like all roads are open to you, and that 2015 is an open book for you to write.

As time passes, we close some chapters, never to be opened again.  But even, as we watch some stories come to a close, some new ones are beginning.  Isn't life exciting like that?

I was reading the Visiting Teaching message for January this morning which taught that the first attribute that Jesus Christ expressed about himself is that he is God's obedient Son.

I like this quote from Elder D. Todd Christofferson, "As we we walk in obedience to the principles and commandments of the gospel of Jesus Christ, we enjoy a continual flow of blessings promised by God in His covenant with us.  Those blessings provide the resources we need to act rather than simply be acted upon as we go through life...Obedience gives us greater control over our lives, greater capacity to come and go, to work and create."

I know that obedience to God is a true principle that brings great rewards.  I was faced with a decision yesterday that really came down to whether I was going to be obedient to what I know to be true or ignore it.  Probably to most people it would seem like a small thing, but to me, who has a testimony of this principle, it was not a little thing, but an opportunity to be obedient to the Lord.  And when I made the decision, although it meant not doing something fun, I felt freer, than I did before.

For those who are looking at the year ahead and wondering, "How can I improve my circumstances?  How can I have greater control over myself?  How can I get more done in my work, in my home?  How can I increase my creative abilities?

The answer has been provided again and again.  The answer is that, "Obedience gives us greater control over our lives, greater capacity to come and go, to work and create."

Apply this principle in every way that you can in the coming year and you will probably be amazed by doors that will open to you and by the great things you can accomplish as you are obedient to the Lord!

All the easy things have been done...

I have recently received a few emails from different people who I don't know, but who are searching for an understanding of what the church believes or who are investigating the gospel.  They stumbled on my blog in that search and emailed me with their questions.

I always try to answer their questions as best I can, but one person, who is investigating the church for the second time asked me to tell her why I am a member of the church.  I thought that was a funny question (no offense to her intended), but I thought, if that's not obvious after over 1,000 blog posts that I have written on the subject, then I don't know what I could say more.

I've thought about her questions though and her situation on and off for a few days, but yesterday, as I was sitting quietly after taking the Sacrament, I was reading through the notes that I took during the General RS Broadcast, and I found the answer that I need to give to this person. 

Quoting the Savior, Linda K. Burton said, "If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine." And in my notes I wrote, "that it is true."

There is no other way to gain a testimony.  We must follow the commandments and do what Christ and his prophets have asked us to in order to get an understanding of their words.  No one can talk us or explain us into an understanding, unless we are willing, through our actions, to follow Him.

This goes for each one of us, who have already entered into covenants with the Lord.  If there are parts of the doctrine that we won't understand or counsel from our leaders which are hard for us to accept, we cannot expect to gain a testimony of them until we follow them in faith.

Not talk about them, or blog about them, or gripe about them, or reason away our disagreement with them...FOLLOW THEM.

In her remarks, Sister Burton also quoted Elder Neal A. Maxwell saying, "All the easy things that the Church has had to do have been done.  From now on, it's high adventure, and followership is going to be tested in some interesting ways."

Our willingness and ability to follow the prophets is going to be tested in some interesting ways.  Can you feel it already?  I think I can.  It's exhilarating and sometimes a little scary to know that the time is at hand.  Our "four minutes" to perform the duties we came here to perform is now!!

I love what Bishop Gary E. Stevenson said about our "four minutes" of mortal performance.  He said, "Self-discipline is needed.  Daily prayer, scripture study, and church attendance must be the foundation of your training.  A consistent pattern of obeying the commandments, keeping the covenants you have made, and following the Lord's standard found in For the Strength of Youth is required."

When is a good time to start doing these things?

Bishop Stevenson said, "Don't wait.  Your four minutes will pass quickly, and you'll have eternity to think about what you did in this life."

I can certainly feel our leaders asking us to fall in and to stand with the Savior in every possible circumstance, every single time.  Are we ready for high adventure?  Are we spiritually fit to be tested?  The only way I can think of to prepare for this is to be obedient to his counsel now, to "do His will" now, so that we too can KNOW of His doctrine, that it is true.

Obedience is the Key to Liberty - Elder Perry

Could it be?  Have we reached the end of our General Conference Review lessons?!  

Whew, that was sort of a lot of work, but totally worth it.  And it's not an end but only a beginning to what will hopefully become a long-standing tradition of keeping our minds and lives centered on the teachings of our modern-day prophets.

Today, we talked about Elder Perry's talk "Obedience to law is liberty."  We actually discussed this talk earlier in the summer, and it's the one-liner that my kids learned pretty easily and repeat often.

We made this little framed key creation to remind us that obedience is the key to liberty. 

Here are two things that I'd like my children to remember from this talk:

1.  The laws of the land won't always agree with the laws of God.  But that doesn't change what is right and wrong for us.

2.  There is a difference between agency (which is a gift from God to all men) and liberty (which we earn as a natural consequence to being obedient to God's laws.)

Elder Perry said, "God reveals to His prophets that there are moral absolutes.  Sin will always be sin.  Disobedience to the Lord's commandments will always deprive us of His blessings.  The world changes constantly and dramatically, but God, His commandments, and promised blessings do not change.  They are immutable and unchanging.  Men and women receive their agency as a gift from God, but their liberty and, in turn, their eternal happiness come from obedience to His laws."

We also noted that Scarlett was given an award at her school's "Anti-bullying" assembly yesterday for displaying the qualities of "good citizenship."  

I asked her what she did to earn this special award, and she wasn't sure, but Scarlett did say that there is a girl in her class whose pencil box keeps falling out of her desk.  When it does, her pencils go all over the floor, and Scarlett has helped her pick them up twice now during class.  

I asked Scarlett if there is a law saying that she has to pick up this other girl's pencils.  She, of course, said no.  But we know that Scarlett picks them up because God teaches us to be kind, to serve others, and to go the extra mile.  

If she doesn't help this girl pick up her pencils, she will not be punished under school laws, but if she does help her, Scarlett is being obedient to God's laws, and will be rewarded with happiness and liberty.

And I think that is the point that Elder Perry is really trying to get at here.

Quoting from his church-issued military manual, he said:

"If you wish to return to your loved ones with head erect,...if you would be a man and live abundantly--then observe God's law.  In so doing you can add to those priceless freedoms which you are struggling to preserve, another on which the others may well depend, freedom from sin; for truly 'obedience to law is liberty."

I know that obedience to God's law brings liberty.  Following even the seemingly smallest suggestions given by our prophets in General Conference has GREATLY blessed my life.  

It has helped me to forgive others, to strengthen tattered relationships, to recognize and rectify my own faults, to treat my children well, to love my husband, to see my worth, and to be wise in big and small matters that I face every day.

It has helped me to "be a [woman]" and live abundantly...and to hopefully return to my Eternal Home with head erect.  

I cannot thank God enough for sending us prophets!  What would we do without them?  I don't want to find out!
