Hi! It's me, Jocelyn, today. Fancy that. I decided I'd take a day after all! :)
The Family: A Proclamation to The World teaches us that "Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live."
My family and I spotted this sign during our drive through the beautiful Pennsylvania countryside on Saturday. We also spotted lots of sweet Amish families out for a ride in their buggies.
I love the Amish and Mennonite people who I have come to know around here. They are such an example to me of love, service, sacrifice, hard work, and humility. They really seem to understand what it means to be a family.
Although there are no people in this photo, when I look at this sign, I see an entire family working together to run their family business and provide for their needs. I'm sure that the children "fetch" the eggs each morning, and run to get mother when someone comes to make a purchase. And this is only a small money-maker for them. The running of the farm, the daily chores, care of the animals, tending the family garden, and the food processing are all jobs that they do together.
The note about "no Sunday sales" is but a small detail that makes it clear to me that this family understands what was meant by our church leaders when they said, "Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness"...and to teach them "to observe the commandments of God."
The sign before it actually caught my husband's eye first and made us both chuckle. It said, "Goat Milk...For Sale...No Sunday Sales." In a world like the one in which we live, this sweet sign is a welcome sight, and a reminder that there are other families out there like us, who believe in teaching children to obey God's laws. Keep an eye out for them, and you might notice them more often, and have more opportunities to learn from and strengthen each other.

ReplyDeleteAhhhh, jocelyn...i love this post and I am greatful for adding me to your links. I was thinking last night about the value and blessing of having a family and i was inspired by the spirit to post about it. I am happy I did. The Lord guided me to do it. Love you.
ReplyDeleteMy parents and I drove through the Amish areas in Pennsylvania 8 years ago. We loved it. We bought root beer at one of the farms. It was pretty gross but it was so fun to see the family working together like that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post. I am really enjoying all of the Proclamation posts and links!
i totally agree. that is what i feel about the amish that life close by too, that they GET it. family means something to them, and doing the right.
ReplyDeleteI had a similar experience with the amish the other day too.
ReplyDeletewe drove out to the country to go to one of their stores .
and on the front door it said.
"We appreciate you Modesty in Dress when you enter this store" yet again teaching a great principle.
Jocelyn thank you for your post . I am sometimes Humbled and overwhelmed by this qoute that we have a responsibilities to raise Our children in righteousness.
But i am grateful for the opportunity to do so
I Love being a Mother
Such a good reminder of where our priorities should be.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I love that you don't even need people in a photo to illustrate family matters. Well done:)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I were just talking about a sign that we used to see on a restaurant in Ga. "Bring in your church bulletin and get 10% off" Such a contradiction! But hello-- Bible belt;)
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful focus on what really matters post. Working together as a family is vital--and I appreciate the reminder.
And oh my gosh I remember and miss those amish sticky buns!
We used to visit Amish country when I lived in New Jersey, way back in 3rd grade. Love your picture! I'm hoping to link up later this week (if I can get a few more preschooler's photos edited) because I really, REALLY love all the prizes!
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing this link-up. It's fun to see how different people capture the Family Proclamation in their families.
ReplyDeleteLove the photo.Gorgeous sky shot.
ReplyDeleteThere are several Amish families near us. About a year ago they lost a young pregnant woman when the horse on their buggy got spooked and jumped a road edge into a creek ditch. The whole community gathered around the young man who in a matter of minutes lost his wife and their child. My heart broke for them, absolutely broke. I have such a deep respect for their way of life and maybe just a bit of jealousy at how easy they make it look, although I know it can't always be easy..
ReplyDeleteI love that your doing this! Family life is to be enjoyed!
