Life Lessons Preschool: Live In the Moment

--Life Lessons Preschool--
Everything I want my children to know before they start school

Lesson 8

"Live in the moment that God has given you."

I have a tendency to time travel in my mind a lot.  When I graduated high school, one of my teachers/mentors gave me the book The Precious Present as a going away gift.  It's all about valuing the current moment, the present season.  Now is the gift.  This moment is "the precious present" that has been given to you to make what you want of it.

I like to make the very most of each minute that I have been given.  Almost to a fault.
I often tell my husband, when he tells me to take it easy, that life is not a dress rehearsal.
Every moment counts.  But also now, this minute is all that is real, so enjoy it, use it, work hard in it, fill it with good deeds, kind thoughts, and sincere words so that you'll remember it with fondness, and then let it go when it is time to move on to a new moment in life.

It is my hope that my children will learn this lesson early in life.

Fun, Cheap, and Slightly Messy Educational Activities to Do At Home

Water Play

In our house, water has many uses, and the number one use is play.  Following the Montessori method of teaching, I like to include "life skills" in the activities that my children are free to explore.  During this activity, the children are free to pour water from one container to another without fear of "getting in trouble" if they spill.  I always include sponges and towels for them to clean up their own messes if they spill.  They love this activity, and we do it often during the dead of winter...in the house.

Here they are at a local children's museum playing in water...seeing what floats and what does not.  In the nursery at church, the kids often have water play.  The teachers use metal baking pans as tubs and fill them with water and small animals for the children to wash and care for.  This is a wonderful activity and has so many variations.  And the movement of water reminds me of the movement of time.  It is fluid and constant, difficult to contain, but must be enjoyed in the moment and allowed to continue on its course.
