Learning the Apostles' Names

As I mentioned some time ago, our family has set a goal to learn the names of all of the apostles and one of their most recent teachings.

To help us accomplish this, we created a poster with the names and photos of each of the Brethren.  The photos are attached by velcro, so we can take their pictures down from time to time and try to place them under the correct name.

NOTE: Here are the two places where you can find photos of the Apostles to use.  When I made this, I manually copied and pasted their individual photos from the LDS.org apostles page into a Word document.  Here's the link to the Apostle cards which the Friend published last fall.  Those are simple to use but the size cannot be manipulated.  Good luck!

This morning, we had a "pop quiz."  I gave the kids three minutes to try to put the pictures in the correct order and next to the correct name.  It was fun to listen to Autumn chanting "Scarlett!  Scarlett!  Scarlett!" as she tried to come up with the correct combination of photos.  It's fun to see our kids getting excited about the gospel.

Another way that we have reviewed the apostles was by playing General Conference Bingo...using Snickers as rewards when our cousins were here visiting us this week.

To be honest Guy is the only kids so far to master the Apostles' names.  He can do it in a minute.  Scarlett can identify six...I guess it's time to pull out the big guns...by teaching them the "LDS Apostle Song":

    1. I know!... so many elderly white guys! I find that studying their teachings has helped me to really identify and know each of them separately and personally.

  2. What a great idea and such an awesome goal! My kids are too little (I think) being 2 and 8 months, but my husband and I should totally take on this challenge. Thank you for the inspiration. It'd be a fun evening activity to do together!

  6. I love your ideas! So fun! My kids (7&5) know them by singing a simple little song. You can put their last names to the tune of 10 little Indians (which is also the tune for the books of the Book of Mormon in the primary hymnal.) Packer, Perry, Nelson, Oaks, Ballard, Scott, Hales, Holland, Bednar, Cook, Christopherson, and Andersen--They're the council of the twelve.

  8. This is so funny! I love your idea, but I was thinking the original 12 - and I couldn't imagine how you'd do that, since we don't really know what they looked like. Now I see!

It's a nice idea...I don't suppose we Catholics would be wanting children to know what the Bishops look like (who we consider in the apostolic line) but perhaps the different priests and ministers in our parish. In any case, the learning activity is great!

  9. I am really glad I found your blog, you have some great ideas on here. I am new to the church (I was baptised on 5th May), and I have just started taking my son to Primary. I love seeing how other families live their life around the Gospel, its so inspiring.

  10. This may seem like a silly question, but where did you find the photos for your velcro board? I love that they're all the same size, but I don't know where to find them that way. Thanks for your help! :)

    1. Hi Heather! Not a silly question at all. I actually had to manually copy and paste their photos from LDS.org (their profiles for each one)...then size them myself. At the time there was not file available with all their official pictures in one place. You can do that...OR...you can use the Primary's Apostle Cards which came out in the Friend last fall. That file has all their pictures, but you cannot manipulate the size. I hope that helps. Here's the link to the Apostle cards: https://www.lds.org/friend/2014/09/special-witness-cards?lang=eng And this is the link where I grabbed their individual pictures: https://www.lds.org/church/leaders/quorum-of-the-twelve-apostles?lang=eng Good luck!
