Reverence is more than just quietly sitting

"Reverence is more than just quietly sitting."

Which is good to know, because there wasn't a whole lot of "quiet sitting" going on in our house this weekend as we watched General Conference together as a family!

And still these words from the Primary song kept coming to my mind, and they were very comforting!

You know what else was super comforting to me?  Elder Hales' talk, the very first talk of Conference.

His words felt like a great big hug to me.

He said that children can comprehend the spiritual communication of Conference, confirming that there is a place for children in General Conference.

Elder Hales also said, "If you listen...the Lord will tell you what he wants you to do with your life.  In Conferences, we can receive the word of the Lord, meant just for us."

He added to the call to hold daily family and personal prayer and scripture study, and weekly family home evening, the admonition to teach our families the messages of General Conference.  He testified that if we study these messages with our families, it will bless our families for generations!!!  Wow, what a promise!!!

And in the Priesthood Session, Elder Perry told how a Primary teacher challenged him to memorize the Articles of Faith and to learn the names and faces of the Apostles and Prophets.

I only heard the last half of his talk, because I was reading a bedtime story to my girls when the session started, but you know I LOVED hearing that!

I have a testimony after this experience that as we study the words of the prophets and live them, we really can become one with them...just as Christ prayed that we can become "one" as He and the Father are one.  One in purpose, one in understanding, and one in the work.

As promised, there is no longer a delay for us in receiving and internalizing the word of the Lord through General Conference, no matter how much we missed trying to listen with kids this weekend!

The talks are already available online to watch, and these messages will be instantly incorporated into the online church curriculum for the youth.

These are the blessings of the latter-days.

So, I think I might have time today...or I will  make time...to re-watch Conference...at least the talks that I missed.

In the meantime, if you are interested in seeing how we helped our children to learn some of the things mentioned in General Conference, you can check out the links below:

    1. Yes! My girls are so in to embroidery right now! I'm sort of wanting to finish President Monson on my own though...Autumn keeps trying to get her hands on it! Should I share???? Mommy wants quiet "knitting" time too!!! :) (She calls it "knitting!")

  2. I felt for the first time, or at least the first that I noticed, that my kids felt the spirit that comes with listening to conference. It was a truly wonderful thing to watch!! :)

  3. There isn't a ton of quiet sitting from my little ones either. But my older ones have started to sit still and take notes of their own choice. I thought of your apostle teaching lessons during conference too. On my list of things to do now!

    1. I feel like my kids have been better at sitting quietly during previous years...BUT...what can ya do? We'll try to be better next time. In spite of this fact, I turned GC on this morning and Autumn exclaimed...I know this one!! So, they can still soak it up even if they are "active listeners!" :) Great job!!

  4. I love your embroidery!! Did you trace those from coloring pages...the Pres. Monson looks like a Friend coloring page?? If so, that is a great idea I'll have to try. :) Not very quiet this time around at my house either....my 5 kids range from 1-9 and it seems the older they get the harder it is. Maybe that's because when they were younger they would nap through lots of conference. ;)

    1. Yeah, it seems like every time we watch Conference it's different...this time we are in a new house with an almost walking baby! And anytime I introduce candy as an element of GC, it's a major distraction. Oh well!

This is the drawing of President Monson that I used: http://ayearoffhe.blogspot.com/2011/09/2011-wk-39-pres-thomas-s-monson.html

I want to do more like this. It's so fun! (Although I used red and blue for his tie and he now looks like President Nixon!! I'm going to rip it out and try green and blue instead!) Good luck!

  10. Thanks so much for sharing your conference notes on the wall idea! While my 6, 4, and almost 1 year-old had fun picking out different colors for me to use (and coloring on the bottom :), it was my 13-year-old who I think was most influenced by the process and end result. Watching me recognize and highlight important doctrine in such a way that she was privy to (as opposed to writing in a notebook) was an amazing part of our Conference weekend, and displaying it will help us to be mindful of that each day!
