The Month of Me Reading List

I don't have time to read during a regular month.

But since it's the Month of Me, I've made time--for me--to read.
I've finished book 1 and 2-3 are well-underway.

Here's my Month of Me reading list:

1.  Between Two Worlds by Zainab Salbi (Insightful account of life in Iraq under Saddam and the effect of war on women.  I found it captivating and eye-opening!)

2.  The Biography of Thomas S. Monson (What an amazing example of goodness!  I've gained much wisdom for how I want to live my own life and have marked many passages.)

3.  The Doctrine & Covenants of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Proof that God still speaks to his prophets.)

4.  Narrative of Sojourner Truth  (I have always wanted to dig deeper into her life story.)

5.  Come Be My Light by Mother Theresa (Ditto.)

6.  The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom  (Incredible story of forgiveness.  Can't wait to start this one!)

7.  The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain  (I hope this book will help me learn to draw, so I can help Scarlett develop her natural artistic talents.  I have never taken an art class, and I am pretty ignorant about drawing!!)

8.  The Backyard Homestead  (This book teaches you how to grow/raise everything you need to survive on 1/4 acre.)

  1. Corrie Ten Boom is one of my favorites -- her other books are very sweet as well. Thanks for this. I was just at lunch with 2 of my friends and they were talking books -- it made me so that I had nothing to add to the conversation. I used to *love* reading, but I've not been reading as much lately. I'm going to add Between 2 Worlds to my list right now. Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day.

  4. I don't know how you do it! That's quite the extensive reading list!
I'll be happy if I finish the one book I'm on right now (I'm on page 200-something out of 600-something pages).
PS the Corrie Ten Boom's Hiding Place is declared as my favorite book on fb! I LOVE that book!!!!! I could read it over and over again. Her testimony is incredible.

  6. That Between Two Worlds one sounds especially fascinating! Have you jotted down any favorite quotes from it, or special insights? That's the type of stuff I like to post on my blog. You want to do a short guest post? ;) (Same as with the Sojourner Truth one, very cool! -- ok, and Mother Teresa!)

  8. My mom owns the movie "The Hiding Place." As a kid, I hated it, it was just too depressing and hard for someone my age to understand. It would be interesting to read now though.
And the "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" is a great beginner book. Good luck!

  9. Wow, I am thinking I need to give myself more time to read. The Book list is awesome. I will pick one or two to put on my reading list.
Right now I am reading Divine Signatures by Lund; an awesome book. The novel I am reading is the Messiah by Toni Sorensen. I loved her book Defined by Christ. Isn't reading a wonderful activity.
    Blessings to you!

  10. I enjoyed the Backyard homestead - it is a good ideas and resource book. And Thomas Monson's biography was inspiring! All of D&C in a month hm? The other books sound interesting. I think I am going to add them to my list. :)

  13. My reading for myself, if I ever get around to it, is to finish a number of books I've started but not finished:
Joseph Smith's biography by his mother
    Game Change
Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
    Founding Mothers
    Nurture Shock
    The Well-Trained Mind

  15. Wow! The Doctrine and Covenants gets heavier as you get into it. It is a true line upon line book. The more you get into it the more developed the themes. I have enjoyed using the Institute Manual with it. Helps for clarification and historical information.

  16. Oh my goodness, Jocelyn, Thank You for this post! I just joined a book club in February and my pick is coming up in August and I need some good ideas...

The only book I've read from your list is The Hiding Place and it is incredible. I loved it!

  17. You are truly amazing if you can read all these in one month! I haven't managed my book group book this month so I listening to the audio as I'm doing laundry.

What a wonderful thing to do for yourself. A few of my favorites and a few new possibilities.

  18. So I started the Mother Teresa book...and am wondering what you thought. It was so foreign to my own way of thinking, so very much about her inner life and thoughts and so very Catholic that I have really struggled with it and pretty much given up.
