I'm Left-Handed Again

Well, my friends, I am left-handed once again.

I went to the doctor this week (finally) to have my hand x-rayed.  It's lots better than it was four weeks ago, but has still been causing me pain as I go about doing my regular work at home, so I decided it needed to be looked at by a professional.  Now I am sporting a thumb/wrist splint that completely renders my right hand useless.

Meanwhile, it takes me about 5 hours to do the dishes and the children are doing whatever their creative little hearts desire (as shown above).  This isn't an abnormal scene by any means, but I can no longer clean that all up in a jiff.  (And they're not done yet!)

It's weird being disabled...as a person who is used to being very able.

It is frustrating to go slowly.

I think about friends I have who are wheelchair bound or who do not have full use of their hands often these days, and I suddenly have so much more compassion for what they do and accomplish in their lives.  It means so much more to me now.

I am humbled by their examples now.

I am very aware of my personal weakness and pride today, and it's difficult to own up to it.

I am praying that the Lord will help me to learn the lessons that I need to learn through this experience quickly and completely.  And I realize that my prayer in and of itself is probably revealing why I have to go through this.  But there it is.  This is me today.  And I do appreciate the opportunity to take a closer look at the things I need to change in myself.

I think my children are now putting the paper scraps down their pants as I type this, so I'll be off.  Hoping you have a blessed day!

PS - It will get cleaned up...if it takes them/us all day!

And it probably will...

  1. that stinks...it wasn't nice having to sleep in the kitchen with one hand and one leg useless....so pathetic. But it will pass...and messes can be cleaned in the future.

  2. So sorry that you are having such a hard time with your thumb. I am constantly inspired by the fact that you can find something wonderful about EVERYTHING! You are amazing.

(and amazing because I would probaby FREAK OUT if my kids were making that kind of mess...not in a screaming deamon kind of way, but in a clean that up right now kind of way! :D)

  4. Sorry about your hand, but like you said you now have a different outlook on life. Though your injury is temporary you have a new found respect for those who are permanently disabled. The Lord works in mysterious ways sometimes :)
By the way, I love the fact that you let your kids be kids and just make a mess. I do the same thing. I think it makes it much more fun, though it does take some time to clean up after but think of all the memories you are creating while making that mess :)

  7. Your children have been given the opportunity to help you more and what a great learning experience. Let them...they'll love it.

Any time I've had an ailment-even a sore thumb- I appreciate those you are permanently disabled and the great accomplishments they have.

Don't do too much with your hand...Rest is the best medicine.

  10. I'm sorry about your hand, hope it gets better soon! I was just reading up about Lent and I was wondering how you're planning on helping your family prepare for Easter--it's been on my mind lately, and since you seem to be so good at that sort of thing, I'd love to hear your input!

  12. Not fun! I feel for you and your thumb! My husband cut his left joint on his thumb last week and had to have surgery, so he is one handed at the moment. It is not easy. Doing things take so much longer to do. Hope it gets better soon!

  13. Good luck. We all have our lessons. Good lessons to learn about cleaning up and helping and serving in the home!

  14. I'm sorry you have to go through that. I'm impressed that you are still typing away determinedly, even if it is left-handedly. I had a brief spate of that once, when I burned the fingers on my right hand.

  16. Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry. But you're attitude about it is awesome. :)

I was just watching this tv special last night on TLC called "The man without a face". This guy had so many tumors on his face that he could only see out of one eye and due to the tumors getting larger and larger over time, he was having a hard time eating. My kids and I kept looking at each other....just grateful that we could "see" each other and "eat". And now that I see you unable to use your hand....I look down at mine as I'm typing and feel so lucky.

Thank you for reminding me of my blessings. You're amazing. :):):)

  18. Well, gosh darn it! Isn't it just incredible how much we take for granted physically? I got a papercut on my thumb and couldn't cut any dang carrots right.

    Sending healing prayers your way...

  20. Oh, I feel for you!! I broke both my arms once, and have so been there. I hated feeling like that. It was a hard lesson to learn, and brought very much home to me how blessed we really are. Love the pics. They show kids in a perfect way.
