Husband and Wife: Love and Care For Each Other

"Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. 'Children are an heritage of the Lord (Psalm 127: 3).'"

These heart-shaped crayons are sooo much fun to make,
and they tie together both ideas from today's lesson on the family.

My children loved peeling the papers off the crayons
and breaking them up in little pieces.

Be sure to use regular crayons, not the "washable" kind.
Also brand new (unused) crayon wrappers are easiest to peel.
It took a while to fill up our pan, so we did it over a few days.

Also, we bought this baking pan especially for this activity.
It will forever be our dedicated "crayon pan"!

When you've got your colors arranged the way you want them,
bake your crayons for about 15-20 minutes at 275 degrees.
(Ours were ready after about 15 minutes, but every oven is different.)

Flip the light on in your oven, so you and your kids can enjoy watching the crayons melt and mix.
You'll probably notice air bubbles rising to the top, right after that, you'll know the crayons are ready to come out.

Since it's so cold outside, we put our pan in the garage to cool.
Try not to jiggle the pan too much, so the colors don't over-mix.

Aren't these cool?

We wrapped ours in cellophane and have already given a bunch away.
They make great Valentine's Day gifts for friends!

Now...to make some more...

  1. I have been wanting to do this all month. Does it ruin the muffin pan?

  2. It did leave stains on our pain...I also saw a note about not wanting to use it for muffins afterward, that's why I bought this one just for crafting! And our other heart muffin pan can live on for food!!

  3. I really love the way the hearts turned out with patches of different colors. where did you get your muffin pan?

  4. The muffin pan is a silicone Wilton mini-heart pan (silicon). I found it at Jo-Ann Fabrics, although Michael's also had a similar one. This one was a slightly better deal. I have a metal one with larger hearts that is strictly for muffins.

  6. LOVE IT!! That is such a super cute project. I remember making crayons in the oven with my Mom as a kid. We used just a regular muffin pan but used muffin liners to not hurt the pan. GREAT idea though and so cute you're giving them away as gifts! Thanks for the idea!

  7. Hi Jocelyn, What an awesome project! These crayons are lovely. I've been bookmarking your blog through this past December, and have really appreciated you sharing so many meaningful family ideas and creative crafts for the kids. We've stolen a few for our household craft time as well... Keep it up!

  10. Great idea! I love how you incorporate gospel principles into fun activities with your children. As soon as I am able to I am going to do this activity with my 2 year old boy. He loves to color.
